Wasp of the Day: The Tree Wasp

This is an easy one for you to finish off the first week of the build-up to Walsall Wasp Awareness Day – an average-sized wasp with a single black dot in her otherwise clear, yellow face.  Its the only UK social wasp with this little dot.

They are one of the more aggressive species, and inhabit woodlands and hedgerows, building their nests either in pre-existing underground holes, or up to 8 metres high in tree holes, bird boxes and other cavities.

You can look for them on Wild Angelica and Rosebay Willowherb flowers.
